We got a call from the school on Tuesday. It is never good when they call in the middle of the day. It is even worse when April gets the call and it is a day that Tye’s truck didn’t start and he was running late, so he just took the van and was across town giving a presentation to some potential clients. Worse yet, April could hear Kyle crying in the background and had to make a bunch of calls to find someone to give her a ride to the school to rescue Kyle and take them to the Urgent Care.
Kyle had fallen off something on the playground and the nurse thought his arm was broken. Well, it certainly was. He broke both of the bones in his forearm. One was broken all the way through and angled. Way to go, Kyle.
Actually, we were a little proud of him at first. You see, he has a long history of falling down and leading with his head. I think we finally got it into his head (ha, ha) that he needs to put his hands out to stop his fall and protect his head. A broken arm is much better than a broken skull or face.
That being said, Kyle does have a particularly hard head. If he were an X-Men, his mutation would be exceptionally dense bone structure in his head. His nickname would be Hammerhead or something. He actually put a dent in the wall with his head once when he fell against it (leading with his head, of course.)
With this in mind, it was a kind of funny when we got the full story from Kyle. He says he “…fell off a pole”. He was “…like 6 or 7 feet up.” When he landed, he landed on his hands and then his head came down like this: he shows us his head slamming into his arm – right in the spot where his arm was broken. Is it possible that he actually broke his arm with his own head? For a normal kid, maybe not, but for Hammerhead, it sounds plausible enough for me.
April took him to the Orthopedic doctor the next day to get him casted up and to get his arm straightened out. Carter wanted to go with him, since he had recent experience with broken arms and could help show Kyle the ropes. Even though they gave him some local shots to help with the pain, when they straightened out and set the bad one it was very painful. Poor Kyle. The pain was excruciating. Carter was sitting on the chair with his hands over his ears. This was very different that his experience. Luckily, they were able to set it right so he won’t have to have surgery. Six more weeks and he should be able to start climbing on 6 foot high things at the playground again.

It's amazing Tye how you can turn a traumatic experience into a very funny story. We were feeling so sorry for Kyle, but now we sort of have to laugh just a little. I guess humor makes it all bearable. We're glad Kyle made it through the experience okay and that Carter was there to give his full support. Maybe after this experience all the kids will be more careful.
Oh my goodness. That is a stinky gift to receive so close to Christmas. Hope that all bone breaks are in the past with none in the future!!
We have some experience with several broken bones. Jessica once broke both of her arms in one summer! That was a fun doctor's visit! Best wishes to Kyle for fast healing bones!
I still feel bad for "Hammerhead Kyle"-even though it does make for a funny story that his head broke his arm???
Ashton just looked at the picture and said, "is it warm in their city?" I replied yes and he said, "do they have snow?" I replied no and then he said, "Do they have Christmas?" HAHA
