End of the Summer? (Tye)
I've spent a few hours out back this week throwing baseballs or footballs or frisbees around with the kids. Unfortunately, most of it has been pretty late in the evening about the time the sun is setting. I have realizing the last few weeks that we are experiencing a sort of 'cabin fever' here.
Kyle and I went outside on Saturday morning to hit some whiffle balls with his bat. We also threw the football around for a while. By about 10 o'clock, I had to go inside as it was getting too uncomfortable for me. Please note that when we went out in the morning to enjoy the cool morning air, it was already in the high 80's. By 10 o'clock, it was quickly approaching the temperature of the surface of the sun.
For those of you who live in cooler climates, our summer is a lot like your winter. We don't go outside much, except to swim (think ski or sled or whetever else you do in that cold white stuff.) July and August are a little rough. When we sing the Beatles' tune of "Here Comes the Sun", we sing it in a minor key.
We are looking forward to the coming fall and winter and spring, which is glorious weather here. The kids are looking forward to playing kickball in the backyard (boys against girls), capture the flag, bike rides, etc.
So as you see the weather map in the summer and see the triple digit temperatures and think to yourself "why would anyone live there", we'll be inside looking at the same weather map and sweating it out. But when you see the weather map in the winter, and it shows your spit freezing before it hits the ground, remember: We would probably wonder why anyone would live there... if we weren't outside playing and enjoying the beautiful weather.
On a more serious note, it just goes to show how much variation there is in this world and how a simple judgement (whether it be of someone's climate or other choices in their lives) may not be as simple as it would appear. There are usually a lot of factors that aren't obvious in the heat of the (summer) moment.
Here is a picture of us taking in a Diamond Backs baseball game. The roof is closed and the stadium is air conditioned.

To enjoy baseball you have to be outside, not inside! Crazy Arizona hot summers-have to make the ball players play inside. One day we will venture out to Arizona during the "good" months of the year-and not during the "hot as the sun" months.
